5 goals for a happier 2017

I don’t really do New Year’s resolutions—but a new year does always feel like a fresh start in some ways and an opportunity to check in with my big-picture goals: What do I want to achieve this year? Is there anything in my life I want to do differently? Am I as happy as I can be?

For me, happiness is intrinsically connected to living with purpose and meaning. I work with animals every single day because that adds value to my life. My dog, horses and even the shelter and sanctuary animals I encounter remind me the importance of kindness, of mindfulness, of compassion. And of the goodness in this world (which sometimes feels very hard to find). So with the animals as my guide, here are my five goals for a happier 2017 …

These quotes will bring peace to your day

In 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. nominated Buddhist monk and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh for the Nobel Peace Prize. In his letter to the committee, Dr. King wrote: “I do not personally know of anyone more worthy of this prize than this gentle monk from Vietnam. He is an Apostle of Peace and Nonviolence.” Though he did not win, Nhat Hanh continues to work tirelessly for peace and enlightenment.

Now 89, Nhat Hanh, who lives in the south of France and travels internationally for speaking engagements, offers regular retreats at Plum Village, the largest Buddhist monastery in Europe. A bestselling author, he’s published more than 100 books. Following are just a few of his most inspiring, life-changing quotes …

Best ways to ensure your animal’s happiness

We all want to provide a happy life for our animals—after all, they’re special members of our family. A good start is to provide clean water, healthy food, a warm bed, toys and socialization. But are you feeding and nurturing their hearts and spirits? Are you harnessing the joyous power of now?

Even more important than the basics to ensure your animal’s happiness is to develop a relationship based on mutual trust, respect and shared peaceful presence, which is something animals are great at teaching. Watch what your animal is telling you by his behaviors; listen to your heart to help you savor moments when your animal is truly blissful; and meditate with your animal to help you connect more deeply and strengthen your bond with each other. Your animal will respond in amazing, contented ways to your new mindful attitude. In turn, the happier your animal is, the more joy will radiate in your own life …

How positive affirmations can transform your life

Affirmations are a great way to keep your energy high. Any time you have a negative thought, just turn it around and say the opposite. At first, it may feel like you’re making it up, but your mind is funny because it believes whatever you tell it with your inner voice.

Unfortunately, most of us go around our whole lives saying all kinds of negative things. Oh, you can’t do that. You can’t do this. You can’t do that. It’s often very negative, and something we carry from our childhood. And so our inner mind believes that. Our inner self believes it. When you actually start to say the opposite, it feels weird, it feels strange, and it feels like we’re making it up. But guess what? Over time, you’ll notice that you’re feeling better. When you say it, it feels true. I can do this. I feel good. I feel happy. So you’ll see and feel that energy has shifted within you …

This book is changing my life right now

I’ve realized something about myself this past week: It’s really, really hard to let go of “stuff.” Even if said stuff is crammed into every nook and cranny of my closets, garage and cupboards and I haven’t seen it in ages.

But thanks to the inspirational (and doable) tips from author Marie Kondo in her bestselling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, I’m happy to report that paring down is getting easier by the day. And the benefits really are life-changing: I’m feeling newly inspired in my business. I feel mentally “lighter.” And the serenity of this experience has reminded me, again, how we have much to learn from our animals …

My 5-3-1 Happiness Challenge: Will you join me?

When I was at Pilates the other day, my trainer told me about 5-3-1, a simple (and genius!) way we can all be happier. Specifically: Spend 5 minutes a day in meditation; write down three things that you are grateful for; and lastly, do one random act of kindness. Each day.

Though I do meditate every day, sometimes I’m too busy to think about focusing my thoughts on gratitude, or going out of my way intentionally to do a random act of kindness seven times a week. So I’m going to give 5-3-1 a try this week starting today, and I’ll report back next week with my results. I’m pretty excited, and I hope you’ll join me!

Before I begin, here are some thoughts about making the 5-3-1 Happiness Challenge really work for me (and hopefully you, too) …
